Peter Jonas (director)

Sir Peter Jonas CBE, FRSA (* October 14, 1946 in London ) is a British cultural managers and opera director.

Life

Jonas first attended the School Benedicte Worth. He then studied at the University of Sussex English literature, but then waved around for his first degree in opera and music history. These two subjects he studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and later at the Royal College of Music in London. A last year, he studied at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester (New York).

In 1974 he went to Chicago as assistant to the music director Sir Georg Solti, where he artistic managing director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra two years later. In his eleven-year tenure, he has worked with many well-known composers, soloists and conductors.

In 1984 he was appointed Director General of the English National Opera. A year later he took office. During his tenure, the international reputation of the National Opera improved by new pieces in the repertoire and performance of well-known pieces for a wide audience.

On 1 September 1993 Sir Peter Jonas was the state director of the Bavarian State Opera. He held this office until August 2006. During this time, he expanded the repertoire among other things, to many Baroque operas. He also sat down energetically for the project " Opera for All " and works by contemporary composers with fourteen premieres.

His efforts were always the main goals of today's opera: accessibility and quality.

As the successor Götz Friedrich took over Sir Peter Jonas, from 2001 to April 2005 the 1st Chairman of the Deutsche Oper conference, the representation of the opera houses in the German Theatre Association.

Since 2005 he is a trustee member of the " Opera in Berlin" and advisory board member of the Technical University of Munich.
