Peter Lane, Baron Lane of Horsell

Peter Stewart Lane, Baron Lane of Horsell FCAS (* January 29, 1925; † 9 January 2009) was a British politician ( Conservative Party ) and businessman.

Life and career

Lane attended school in the English Sherborne. As a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy he served on the destroyers HMS Ripley, HMS Saumarez and HMS Viceroy in the North Atlantic.

After the war he returned to civilian life and came back as a chartered accountant in the tax office of his father, Lane Scotten, one which later merged with Binder Hamlyn. There he rose to become senior partner and was this one from 1979 until 1992.

He worked as an auditor in a number of Board committees. For more than a decade, he chaired the Websters Publications. He held the chair at Opperman Holdings, KMPH Advertising, Rippers, British Electronic Controls, Brent International, Elswick and Automated Security and Attwood, in the latter he was the successor of Sir Denis Thatcher.

Lane was elected in 1981 as the Deputy Chairman of the National Union of Conservative Party. He was chairman of the National Union 1986 until 1991. His presidency began with fears that the 7,000 -member Anglo - Asian Conservative Society was infiltrated by militant Sikh separatists. Lane proposed a " One Nation Forum " before, which should include all ethnic groups. In 1983, he chaired the party conference in the memorable session, resigned at the Cecil Parkinson.

In 1984 he was knighted. On July 17, 1990, he was appointed Life Peer.

Later, he was also chairman of the Addiction Action for 1991-1994 and the Nuffield Hospital from 1993 to 1996 and had several functions as director held.

Lane died on 9 January 2009 at the age of 83 years.

Family

Lane married in 1951 Doris Botsford, who died in 1969. His two daughters survived him. The older, Rosalie is married to Lord Trefgarne.
