Peter Piot

Peter Piot ( born February 17, 1949 in Leuven / Belgium) until the end of 2008 the United Nations Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of UNAIDS.

Life

Piot earned 1974 medical doctorate at the University of Ghent and in 1976 was co- discoverer of the Ebola virus in Zaire. 1978/79 he was a senior scientist for infectious diseases at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. In 1980 he graduated as a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Antwerp and was there until 1992, then Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Immunity, Institute of Tropical Medicine.

In the 1980s, he started and expanded various collaborative projects against AIDS in African countries Burundi, Côte d' Ivoire, Kenya, Tanzania and the Project SIDA in Kinshasa / Zaire, which is the first international HIV / AIDS project was in developing countries.

1986/1987 he was associate professor at the University of Nairobi and from 1988 to 1992 also associate professor of public health at the Free University of Brussels.

From 1991 to 1994, Piot president of the International AIDS Society (IAS). In 1992 he became deputy director of the Global Programme against AIDS (English: Global Programme on AIDS ) of the World Health Organization ( WHO).

On December 12, 1994, he was appointed Under-Secretary General of the UN and the first Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV / AIDS ( UNAIDS). From this position different Piot on 31 December 2008 as the successor to Michel Sidibé was appointed.

In 2010, he became director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in Bloomsbury, London.

1995 hit King Albert II of Belgium Piot knighted with the title " Baron". He is a member of the medical institute of the National Academy of Science of the United States, the Royal Academy of Medicine in Belgium and the Royal College of Physicians in London.

Peter Piot is the author of 15 books and over 500 scientific articles. He has received numerous awards for scientific and social achievements, including the 2013 Prince Mahidol Award.
