Peter Planyavsky

Peter Planyavsky ( born May 9, 1947 in Vienna) is an Austrian organist and composer.

Life

During his time as a student at the Vienna Schottengymnasium Planyavsky studied at the Vienna Music Academy organ, composition and improvisation ( with Anton Heiller ), piano (with Hilde Seidlhofer ) and conducting (with Hans Gilles Berger). He graduated with diplomas for organ and church music in 1966. Subsequently, he worked for a year in an organ workshop ( intonation and installation ), 1968 he was organist in the Upper Austrian Schlägl.

From 1969 to 2004, Planyavsky organist at St. Stephen's Cathedral and in the years 1983 to 1990 with overall responsibility Dommusikdirektor. In 1980 he was appointed professor of organ, improvisation and liturgical organ playing at the Vienna Academy of Music and was also from 1996 to 2002 served as director of the department of church music. In addition, he regularly turns to the church music based work and writes articles in professional journals.

Concert tours and master classes led Peter Planyavsky in many European countries, Japan, Australia, South Africa, Hong Kong, Korea, Canada and the United States. In his master classes, he focuses on Anton Heiller, Johannes Brahms, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Baroque music, but especially to improvisation and liturgical organ playing. In addition Planyavsky is often served as a juror at competitions. Planyavsky recorded numerous LPs and CDs, such as recordings of all the organ works of Johannes Brahms and Felix Mendelssohn. In panel recordings, he demonstrated his art of improvisation.

As a conductor Planyavsky has emerged not only with the great works of church music, but was also active the concertos for organ and orchestra. So concerts by Alfredo Casella, Howard Hanson, Leo Sowerby, Ottorino Respighi, Aaron Copland and Jean Langlais were listed under his leadership, among others. Peter Planyavsky composed organ, choral and orchestral music. One of his compositional specialties is the parody; of the larger works of this kind has been the contented bus, the parody of a Bach cantata, performed more than 40 times.

In addition, worked and acts Planyavsky as an expert in numerous organ building projects.
