Peter Rowan

Peter Rowan ( born July 4, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts) is an American bluegrass musician and songwriter. He can look back on a long career as a soloist and member of various bands, including Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys.

Life

Due to a favorable family environment marked - his parents and several relatives were musicians - Peter Rowan learned to play guitar at an early age. As a student he gained experience in various bands. Founded by him at the High School Tex- Mex group The Cupids was remarkably successful in the Boston area and released a single.

In 1963, he broke off his university studies to become a professional musician. First, he joined as a mandolin player and singer of the Mother Bay State Entertainers. With the assistance of Bill Keith, with whom he had previously making music a few times, he was by Bill Monroe for his backing band, the Blue Grass Boys, committed.

Career

In 1967, he separated himself from Bill Monroe and founded, together with David Grisman, the band Earth Opera, which grossed several albums and became known also as the opening act of The Doors. During these years he worked increasingly as a songwriter. His most famous title was the 1969, the Panama Red 1972 he joined the folk / rock band Seatrain, whose records were produced by George Martin.

In 1973 he became a member of Jerry Garcia's bluegrass band Old and in the Way, in which he wrote his old companion David Grisman played. A year later he founded along with Clarence White, David Grisman, Richard Greene and the group Muleskinner, which only briefly had also inventory.

In the 1980s, Rowan worked several times together with Flaco Jimenez. In 1983 he founded the band in Nashville Wild Stallions. With his brothers Chris and Lorin he worked several times under the name of The Rowans on joint projects. Three albums were released between 1975 and 1977. In the following years he played with many famous bluegrass musicians, including Jerry Douglas and Tony Rice. In addition, he released several solo albums, where it covered a wide spectrum of musical styles. So in 2001 he published the album "Reggae Billy " in which melancholy Country sounds and fiddle music were backed up with a reggae rhythm.

In 2002 he, together with Don Edwards recorded the album High Lonesome Cowboy, which was nominated in 2003 for a Grammy in the Best Traditional Folk Album division. In September 2010, appeared with "Legacy" a collection of mostly original songs, returned with the Rowan to his bluegrass roots.
