Peter Schmidl

Peter Schmidl ( born January 10, 1941 in Olomouc, Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia ) is an Austrian clarinetist

Training and artistic career

Peter Schmidl was born into a family of musicians. So his father Viktor Schmidl and his grandfather Alois Schmidl were - seemed even at the time of Gustav Mahler with the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra - first clarinetist of the Vienna Philharmonic.

At the age of six years, Peter Schmidl received his first piano lessons. After graduation with honors at the Humanistic Gymnasium Rainergasse he studied from 1959 to 1964 at the former principal clarinet of the Vienna Philharmonic, Rudolf Jettel, at the Vienna Music Academy. 1963 to 1965 he studied at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna acting and directing.

In 1965 he was appointed to the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera, in the sequence in which the Vienna Philharmonic. Since 1968, Peter Schmidl 's first solo clarinetist of the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic.

2001 to 2005 he was managing director of the Vienna Philharmonic. Since 2006 he has been Dean of the Vienna State Opera.

Besides his work as an orchestral musician Peter Schmidl has been active as a soloist. Working together with conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, Karl Böhm, Riccardo Muti, André Previn, Seiji Ozawa, James Levine, Nicholas Harnouncourt, Michael Tilson Thomas, Sándor Végh or Yehudi Menuhin characterized his career. At the invitation of Herbert von Karajan, he participated in numerous concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic as principal clarinetist.

Peter Schmidl is a member of several chamber music ensembles such as the Vienna Octet, the Vienna Ring -Ensemble and the Vienna Wind Soloists.

Teaching

Since 1967 he has taught at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna ( from 1980 extraordinary, from 1985 full professor ).

  • Reinhard Gutschy, Ferdinand Steiner and Margaret Knogler the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg,

  • Karl Korak and Jörg Wachsenegger the orchestra of the United Stages of Vienna and
  • Wenzel Fuchs to the Berlin Philharmonic.

Other activities

Since 1999 Artistic Schmidl is Chairman at the Pacific Music Festival Sapporo in Japan.

In 2004, he was designated as a concert director of the Salzburg Festival ( since 2007). As a result of disagreements with the director Jürgen Flimm Peter Schmidl did not occur at this position.

In the season 2004/ 05 created and presented Peter Schmidl the talk show All Theatre Austrian Theatre, where he held talks among other things, with the former Austrian State Secretary for Art and Media, Franz Morak, KS Waldemar Kmentt, Christian Thielemann and Rudolf Buchbinder.

Since 2005 he has been co-host ( with William Sinkovicz ) of the ORF program Philharmonic seduction.
