Peter Schubert

Peter Schubert ( born February 4, 1938 in Dresden, † 1 October 2003 in Berlin) was Albanologist. He worked over 35 years in the diplomatic service of the GDR and was, among other ambassadors in Albania.

Life

From 1956 to 1959 Peter Schubert studied as one of the first Germans to the newly opened University of Tirana Albanian language, literature and history. In 1961 he obtained his degree in linguistics with a thesis on the Albanian alphabet at the Humboldt University in Berlin.

1962 Schubert entered the diplomatic service of the GDR and worked until 1971 at the Foreign Ministry. During this time he was stationed twice in Tirana. 1971-1973 he was to graduate studies at the Diplomatic Academy of the Foreign Ministry of the Soviet Union in Moscow. By 1989 he was back working as a Balkan expert on the GDR Foreign Ministry. 1989-1990 witnessed his diplomatic career peaked and its end: Peter Schubert was the last ambassador of the GDR in Tirana. In this role, he experienced the same time the collapse of the communist systems in East Germany and Albania.

The German reunification forced a complete career change for the GDR diplomats. Schubert used his expertise and his roots in Albania as a consultant for politics and business and became involved with the Foundation for Science and Politics in research projects related to Albania and Kosovo.

In Albania, Peter Schubert of scientists and politicians of different parties as a friend and advisor was very much appreciated.
