Peter Schuster

Peter Schuster ( born March 7, 1941 in Vienna) is Emeritus Professor of Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Vienna from 2006 to 2009, President of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

Scientific career

After passing the matriculation examination with distinction in 1959, Peter Schuster studied at the Vienna University of Chemistry and Physics and a doctorate in 1967 sub auspiciis praesidentis Dr. phil. From 1968 to 1969 he was a post-doctoral assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen at the Nobel Laureate Prof. Manfred Eigen, with whom he developed the quasispecies model together.

In 1971 he habilitated at the University of Vienna in Theoretical Chemistry and was appointed in 1973 for the same subject to the Ordinary Professor at the University of Vienna. Since this year he is (with a brief interruption) Director of the Institute for Theoretical Chemistry and in 2004 was the first Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry newly created.

Peter Schuster is a corresponding member since 1992 and a real member of the mathematics and science class at the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 1984. He is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Academy - Institute of Biophysics and X-ray structural research. From 2000 to 2003 he held the position of Vice President of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, 2006, he was elected president.

His research interests include the theory of the hydrogen bonds and intermolecular forces, kinetics of proton transfer reactions in aqueous solutions, non-linear dynamics of complex systems, theory and modeling of molecular evolution, structures and properties of RNA molecules, optimization of RNA structures, "neutral networks " biopolymers, analytical approximations of non- linear differential equations of physics, chemistry and neurobiology, as well as genetic regulation and metabolic networks.

From 1992 to 1995 he was on leave from the University of Vienna to (now Leibniz Institute for Age Research - Fritz Lipmann Institute ), the function of the founding director of the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology in Jena perceive. Peter Schuster is an external faculty member of the Biological- Pharmaceutical Faculty of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and External Faculty Member of the Santa Fe Institute in the USA. He was the owner of several visiting professorships.

He is a member of several other scientific societies, since about 2009, the National Academy of Sciences, and the recipient of numerous awards, including since 1992 the Austrian Badge of Honour for Science and Art.

Peter Schuster is the author of nine books and about 300 publications in scientific journals (papers, review articles and essays ). In several scientific journals, he is (co - ) editor.

In autumn 2012, Schuster was elected by the Senate of the Technical University of Vienna for the period 2013-2018 for the University Council member of the Vienna University of Technology.
