Peter Scott

Sir Peter Markham Scott CH, CBE, DSC, FRS, FZS ( born September 14, 1909 in London, † August 29 1989 in Bristol, ∞ 1942-1951 Elizabeth Jane Howard) was a British ornithologist, conservationist and painter. He was the only child of Antarctic explorer Robert Falcon Scott ( 1868-1912 ). He was a half brother of Wayland Young, 2nd Baron Kennet ( 1923-2009 ), and his godfather was the playwright Sir James Matthew Barrie ( 1860-1937 ).

Life

Markham Scott was educated at Oundle School and the University of Cambridge and graduated in 1931 from Trinity College. He inherited his mother Kathleen Markham Scott, the artistic talent in 1933 was his first exhibition in London. As a very good sailor, he represented the British team at the Olympics in 1936 in Berlin and won the Olympic bronze medal in sailing in the one-man Olympic dinghy.

During the Second World War Markham Scott served in the Royal Navy, as it has already done his father. He fought there initially on destroyers in the North Atlantic and later as commander of a Kanonenbootsflotille in the English Channel against German speedboats. In 1945 he stood as a candidate in the general election Wembley for the Conservative Party, but without success. He founded in 1948 the Severn Wildfowl Trust, now Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust in Slimbridge, Gloucestershire, with which he stood up to his death, always in very close contact. In the following years he headed various ornithological expeditions worldwide, and has been with educational television appearances with respect to wild ducks and geese in the floodplains very popular. He wrote and illustrated several works on the subject, including his autobiography, The Eye of the Wind ( 1961 to 1977 ).

Markham Scott took on 1956 of gliding and was British champion in 1963. He was from 1968 to 1970 chairman of the British Gliding Association ( BGA) and was president of the Bristol & Gloucestershire Gliding Club. For the formation of Prince Philip in gliding he took responsibility, Prince Philip, is today still the patron of the BGA.

On the 12-meter yacht Sovereign he took in 1964 as a team leader at the sailing regatta for the America 's Cup in part, at the time was held by the U.S., and lost 4-0.

At the University of Birmingham was Markham Scott 1973-1983 Chancellor. He was co-founder in 1961 of the WWF (World Wildlife Fund for Nature ), designed its panda logo and was appointed the first chairman. He was also a member of the Royal Society in London. Quite a long time, he was Vice President of the British Naturalists ' Association, after his death it was established in honor of the Peter Scott Memorial Award.

1975 Sir Peter struck with Robert Rines in the journal Nature the name " Nessiteras rhombopteryx " for the Loch Ness monster before.
