Peter Straub (politician)

Peter Karl Otto Straub ( born September 8, 1939 in Waldshut, Waldshut- Tiengen today ) is a German politician of the CDU from 1996 to 2011 and was President of the Landtag of Baden- Württemberg.

Education and work

Straub began after graduating from the High Rhine -Gymnasium Waldshut a degree in law in Freiburg and Munich. In 1962 he passed the first and 1966 second state examination. Since then he has worked as a lawyer.

Political activity

Straub's political involvement began in 1968 with the entry into the CDU. In that year he became councilor in Waldshut or Waldshut- Tiengen (until 1989 ). From 1984 to 1999, he also belonged to the council of the district of Waldshut.

In November 1984 Straub retired as a deputy in the parliament of Baden -Württemberg. From 1992 to 1996 he was Vice President of the Landtag. He was elected to succeed Fritz Hopmeier to the Landtag president in 1996. After the parliamentary elections of 2001 and 2006 he was in each case confirmed in his office. After the state election, 2011, he no longer belonged to the parliament and therefore did not occur at the election of the Landtag president. His successor as directly elected Member of Parliament constituency Waldshut was Felix Schreiner. New President of the Parliament was Willi Stächele.

In addition to his parliamentary activity Straub also represented the state of Baden- Württemberg in the Committee of the Regions of the European Union ( CoR), which he was president from 2004 to 2006. Straub is also co-founder of the Upper Rhine Council.

In the criticism Straub came in the summer of 2010, when he demanded a Porsche as a company car, which he eventually took back distance.

Family and Private

Peter Straub was born the son of a lawyer and later CDU politician Joachim Straub. He is married and has two children and two grandchildren.
