Peter Thomas Bauer

Peter Thomas Bauer, Baron Bauer ( born November 6, 1915 in Budapest as Péter Tamás Bauer; † 2 May 2002, London ) was a British development economist of Hungarian descent. He was regarded as a critic of the view that development aid coming from abroad developing countries.

Life

Bauer studied law in Budapest before moving to England at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, to its conclusion studied economics in 1937 from 1934. After a brief stint in the private sector for the trading company with contacts in the Far East Guthrie & Co. in 1960, he came to the London School of Economics, where he acted until 1983 as a professor.

Work

For Bauer, the core of development is to be sought in the expansion of individual choices. The state takes on the role to protect life, liberty and property, so that the individual can pursue his own goals and desires.
