Peter Thomson (golfer)

Peter William Thomson ( born August 23, 1929 in Melbourne ) is a former Australian professional golfer who won The Open Championship five times. He is the only golfer who in the 20th century was the Open Championship three times in a row ( 1954-1956 ) to decide for themselves. The other two victories came in the years 1958 and 1965.

His world titles won include ten different national championships, including nine times alone the New Zealand and Australian three times. In the U.S., Thomson played rather little, he only won one event on the PGA TOUR and its best rankings in the majors, which are held there were a fourth place at the U.S. Open in 1956 and a fifth-place finish at the Masters in 1957. The PGA Championship he never played.

As a Senior Thomson played then but in North America, recorded on the Champions Tour - then Senior PGA Tour - in the 1985 season nine hits ( a still unbroken record ) and won superior to the money list standings.

The last victory succeeded him in 1988 at the British PGA Seniors Tournament. In the same year he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. He is also an honorary member of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.

Peter Thomson was 1962-1994 President of the Australian PGA. He led the International team at the Presidents Cup in 1996, 1998 and 2000 as captain (non -playing captain ).
