In 1737 he became a member of the Great Council of the city.

The Sanctuary Birnau, he built 1747-1750 for the monastery of Salem, is considered his masterpiece. This creates Thumb solid architecture in conjunction with the playful figurative features Joseph Anton Mayer's wet and the ceiling frescoes by Gottfried Bernhard Goz an impressive work of art. The east façade and other parts of the monastery church of St. Gallen were probably built by Johann Michael Beer of Bildstein after drafts Peter Thumbs.
