Peter Tidemand Malling
Peter Tidemand Malling, ( born November 20, 1807 in Strømsø (now part of Drammen ), † April 19, 1878 in Kristiania ) was a Norwegian book printers, publishers, booksellers and publishers of newspapers.
His parents were Michael Malling (1776-1834) and Maren Elisabeth Klein ( 1777-1856 ). In his first marriage he married on March 22, 1836 Ingeborg Theodora Iversen ( 1811-8. January 1838 ), daughter of Sheriff's Peder Iversen ( 1769-1844 ) and his wife Marthe John Datter Bye (1779 -ca. , 1848). With her he had the daughter Elisabeth Sofie Malling, who married a factory. His second wife he married on August 17, 1843 Elisabeth Marie Moe ( 18 December 1807-24. February 1854 ), daughter of pin bailiff writer Hans Moe ( 1767-1814 ) and his wife Susanna Malling ( 1781-1856 ). In his third wife he married on December 23, 1856 Betsy Andrea Marie Wilhelmine Cappelen (18 August 1828-12. December 1903 ), daughter of Johan Henrik Sorenskrivers Cappelen ( 1795-1850 ) and his wife Hanna Sophie Manthey ( 1805-1881 ). With her he had seven children.
After his schooling in Strømsø Malling went into Darammen to the Latin School. But he was stronger on the typographic art as of the old classics and went in Drammen's first book printer Carl F. Rode into teaching. In 1827 he finished this training. He then traveled to Amsterdam, where his mother's family lived. There he found work as a typesetter in a large print. In 1829 he was in Hans T. Winters printing and lithographic Institute in Christiania. technical department manager and founded his own publishing practical manuals, cookbooks, medical advice, and similar useful literature. 1835-1838 he was the technical director in the new " Guldberg and Dzwonkowskis printing ". 1837 gave him an inheritance, extending its activity. When printing the winter, he had held the lead for the pressure of the illustrated Norsk Penning magazine and the " Guldberg and Dzwonkowskis printing " of the illustrated " Skilling - Magazin."
From 1838 he started his own business. In 1839 he began publishing the Dagbladet, a newspaper for trade, shipping and policy, but was soon discontinued. In 1840 he bought Ludvig Risums printing and moved to Tønsberg with this. He was until 1841 the newspaper out Tønsbergs Mercur. His publishing house in Christiania he pursued further at this time. Then he moved to Christiania back, bought a large plot of land for his publishing company and acquired the rights of citizenship as a printer. He also had a bookstore; it was the first retail book trade in Norway. His publishing house was a long time with 15 to 20 books a year the largest in the country. He moved textbooks for secondary schools and for the University from 1846 to 1859 the Norske almanakk and together with Cappelen by 1866 until 1876., The circulation was 60,000. Many of the professors were among his scientific authors, the historian Peter Andreas Munch and the philologist Carl Richard Unger. The Norwegian grammar of Ivar Aasen and the Norwegian dictionary included in his repertoire. He also campaigned for women's literature. Already in 1820 he had made the acquaintance of Henrik Wergeland and published many of his works. At times, led Malling and the printing works of the Norwegian Bank.
Malling founded in 1851 the Norwegian Booksellers Association, was the first Vice- President, then from 1870 until his death president. He also made an important for Nordic Cooperation on his area of expertise. He was also a long time member of the Municipal Council in Christiania. He held the Masons a high degree, and sold or donated much of the Lodge. He was also head of the "old poor house " in Christiania. 1873 and his son, Captain Theodor malling, in the company worked. Two years later, the printing press was introduced into a society with Aschehoug & Co, but retained the name " Det Mallingske Bogtrykkeri ".
