Peter van Walsum

A. Peter van Walsum ( born June 25, 1934 in Rotterdam) is a Dutch diplomat who in the conflict over the Western Sahara was a personal representative of the UN Secretary General. He was appointed by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in July 2005 and practiced his task until the end of his mandate in September 2008.

Van Walsum closed in 1959 to study law at the University of Utrecht from 1960 to 1962 and served in the Dutch armed forces. 1962 and 1963 he worked in the civil emergency planning, the Ministry of Interior ..

After that, he was almost 40 years in the service of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs operates, including as a permanent representative of his country in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Paris and the European Commission in Brussels and in the embassies in Bucharest, New Delhi and London.

After his posting to the Permanent Representation of the Netherlands to the United Nations in New York in 1999, he represented his country in the United Nations Security Council and in 2000 was chairman of the committee which drafted sanctions against Iraq.

Peter van Walsum is married and has four children.
