Peter Viertel
Peter Viertel ( November 16, 1920 in Dresden, † November 4, 2007 in Marbella, Spain ) was a German-born American writer and especially a successful screenwriter.
Life
Peter Viertel was the second son of actress and screenwriter Salka helmsman and the writer and director Berthold Viertel. With his parents he went in 1928 in the United States, where he grew up in Santa Monica with his two brothers John and Thomas.
During World War II district served in the Marines and was wounded in the South Pacific. Thereafter, he was promoted to officer and worked for the secret service.
His first book appeared in The Canyon 1940 - quarter was just 19 - and immediately had success. Through his parents he had numerous contacts with writers and to Hollywood. He started - even to make money - writing screenplays, which he had great success. Already his first he wrote in 1942 for the Hitchcock film saboteurs. Other well-known films, at their screenplays, he has worked are John Huston's The African Queen (1951) and John Sturges ' The Old Man and the Sea ( 1958).
District, who was a close friend of the director John Huston, man recorded his experiences during the filming of The African Queen in his well -known novel in the jungle, the then German title of the first edition of White Hunter, Black Heart ( 1953). The book was made into a film in 1990 under the title White Hunter, Black Heart by Clint Eastwood and reissued.
Quarter was married in first marriage to Virginia Schulberg ( first marriage with Budd Schulberg ) born Ray, with whom he had a daughter. In 1960 he married the actress Deborah Kerr. The two lived up to Kerr's death on 16 October 2007 in Switzerland in the monastery and in Marbella, Spain.
