Peter von Hess

Peter von Hess ( born July 29, 1792 in Dusseldorf, † April 4, 1871 in Munich) was a German painter.

Life

Hess was the son of the engraver Carl Ernst Christoph Hess, from which he also received his first art lessons. From 1800 Hess created his first stitches; for the most part he preferred here the representations of animals.

At 14, Hess was approved in 1806 as a student at the Art Academy in Munich. His military service he was able to work in the General Staff of Prince Carl Philipp von Wrede. This he accompanied during the wars from 1813 to 1815 and the Congress of Vienna. During this time, Hess created a large number of sketches, which then formed the basis for his oil paintings.

Later, Hess took over again study trips to Switzerland, Italy and Austria. In his early work, the images were rather small; the first large-scale picture of Peter Hess was the presentation of the Battle of Arcis sur Aube in May 1814.

In 1833 he accompanied the Bavarian King Otto I to Greece, where he gave, inter alia, whose catchment firmly in Nauplia. 1835 was also a painting in oil with many portraits; 1839 a second showing the reception of Otto in Athens (both now in Munich, Neue Pinakothek ). 1839 followed Hess the invitation of Tsar Nicholas I to Saint Petersburg and Moscow and presented in eight major battle scenes, the main events of 1812 dar. In the arcade of the Munich Hofgarten he had with his mate Nilson from 39 frescoes from the history of the Greek independence movement.

At the age of 78 years, Hess died on April 4, 1871 in Munich. He is buried at the Old South Cemetery.
