Peter Libra worked since 1862 as a professor of chemistry in Christiania. Together with his brother in law Cato Maximilian Guldberg he headed from 1864 to 1867 for thermodynamic studies of chemical reactions, the mass action law ( "law of chemical mass action " ) from and resulted in the notion of equilibrium constants. He also constructed a Ebulliometer to determine the alcohol content in beer.
