Peter Wexler

Peter J. Wexler (* 1923, † 2002) was a British linguist and Lexikologe.

Life and work

Peter Jacob Wexler received his doctorate in 1951 at the Sorbonne about La formation du vocabulaire the chemins de fer en France, 1778-1842 ( Geneva / Lille 1955). He first taught at the University of Manchester, then at the University of Essex. Wexler provided numerous materials for Bernard Quemadas Matériaux pour l' histoire du français vocabulaire. Data Auditions et documents lexicographiques, Besançon 1959-1965. Above all, he turned to the Oxford English Dictionary 50,000 quotes available, including 500 primary documents. He has published in the Cahiers de lexicologie.
