Only after a stint in the then U.S. North American Soccer League ( " NASL " ) with the Portland Timbers in 1975 - where he scored 17 goals in 22 games - and the subsequent return to England for the first division club Birmingham City started off the season 1975/76, a steady rise of sports. Nine Championship gates followed shortly after the subsequent season of change in the second division to Nottingham Forest, which has been trained at the time of Brian Clough.

Within the last two seasons withe rose with his new club up in the top English league and won was immediately awarded the English championship. Nevertheless, he left to the beginning of the 1978/79 season his success site and joined the second division club Newcastle United. Thus he missed the dual success of Nottingham Forest in the European Cup of Champions 1978/79 and European Cup up 1979 /80. The ascent to the First Division was denied him in the two years and withe joined in May 1980 again his club - now in the direction of the first division club Aston Villa.

There he contributed 20 league goals in the 1980/81 season and was instrumental in the fact that his team could win the championship. The following year, withe crowned his career by winning the European Cup of Champions and scored in the final against the German champions Bayern Munich in Rotterdam stadium " De Kuip " in the 67 minutes the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory to his team. Other highlight of this year was for him - shortly after his debut on 12 May 1981 against Brazil - his participation in the World Cup 1982 in Spain. Although he was the first player from Aston Villa who has been nominated to the World Cup finals, he did not come in the tournament itself for the England team but for use.

In the subsequent three years at Aston Villa Withe could celebrate no further significant successes more and moved in July 1985 to the second division Sheffield United. In November 1984, he had previously completed his eleventh and last international match against Turkey and then ended his national team career (a total while he managed only one goal against Hungary).
