Peter Yates

Peter Yates ( born July 24, 1929 in Aldershot, Southamptonshire, England; † January 9, 2011 in London) was a British film director.

Life

Yates began his career as an editor and assistant director and worked on the side as a director at the theater. In 1962 he staged the musical Summer Holiday his first feature film.

After minor directorial work in the UK (including for the TV series The Saint with Roger Moore) Yates moved in 1967 to the United States over. There he had his first major success with the action film Bullitt ( Steve McQueen ), who cared mainly because of its unique car chases until then stir. Yates turned with stars like Dustin Hoffman ( John and Mary ), Robert Mitchum ( The Friends of Eddie Coyle ), William Hurt and Sigourney Weaver ( in each case, the eyewitness ), the complex court thriller Suspect - Under Suspicion ( starring Cher, Dennis Quaid and Liam Neeson ) and the fantasy film Krull ( also starring Liam Neeson ), for which he received the award for the best film of 1981 on the Mystfest. The drama Breaking Away ( Breaking Away, starring Dennis Quaid ) and The In-Laws ( The Dresser, with Albert Finney ) earned him Oscar nominations each in the categories of Best Director and Best Film.
