Peterborough (Ontario)

The Canadian city of Peterborough is located in the province of Ontario, 125 km north-east of Toronto on the Otonabee River. One of the main attractions of the city is the Peterborough Lift Lock, which was opened in 1904.

History

1818 Adam Scott moved west of the Otonabee River. A year later the then village was founded with the name of Scottdale. Since that time, the city grew fast, especially by the many immigrants. One of the biggest waves of immigrants, the city experienced in 1825, in which more than 2,000 Irish immigrants arrived from Cork. 1893, the Peterborough canoe company was founded.
