Bismarck Tower in St. Peter's head

The Peter head near the Palatine town of Bad Durkheim ( state of Rhineland- Palatinate ) is a 487 m high mountain in the Haardt. On its summit stands the Bismarck tower.

Geography

Geographical location

The mountain is located 3 km northwest of Bad Durkheim on the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest on the forest district of the local church Kallstadt; their residential areas in the Northeast is 4 km away. On the southeast slope of the mountain, 700 meters from the summit, there is the ruin of the court Weilach, which was first mentioned in 1381. Southwest of Peter the head Isenach flows past before reaching the residential area of Bad Durkheim.

Accessibility

St. Peter's head performs a paved road from Leistadt, the distance to 470 m above sea level parking lot at the Forest House Lindemann rest is 2.5 km. From there you can reach over a foot in about ten minutes to the summit.

Environment

In close proximity to St. Peter's head there are a number of historical sites: on the southeastern Felstone the same block of stone, which served as a cult object in Celtic times, and on the southeast Felstone foothills, the boxes Mountain, also Celtic ring wall Heidenmauer and the former Roman quarry Kriemhildenstuhl.

Beyond the Isenachtals lie the ruins of the medieval monastery of Limburg and the Hard castle.

Summit

On the summit plateau of Peter the head of more than 30 m high Bismarck tower offers a panoramic view of the almost 400 meters lower, Upper Rhine Valley in the east, the Palatinate Forest in the west and its eastern edge, the Haardt, which extends from north to south. In the basement of the tower, a restaurant is operated.

On May 27, 1925, the concrete ceiling of the second viewing platform collapsed during a school class on the tower was on the way. A student came here to death, several children were injured.

Sports

The Peter head every year in October goal of the bathroom Dürkheimer mountain run, which is the longest and steepest component of the Palatine mountain running series with 8700 m distance and 510 m accumulated pitch. The mountain and its surroundings are also recommended for mountain biking.
