Petone

Petone is a suburb of the city of Lower Hutt in New Zealand.

Petone is located at the southern end of the narrow triangular plain of the Hutt Valley on the north shore of Wellington Harbour. The name comes from the Maori Pito -one, " end of the beach " or " Short beach ".

North of Petone is Ava, Moera east, south of Wellington Harbour and the West Korokoro.

History

Petone was the first European settlement in the region and still retains many buildings from this period that are now considered landmarks. The first settlers arrived in January 1840 on the "Aurora", later the "Cuba". Then the plan was to build on the site of today's Petone to a settlement called " Britannia ". Since this area was very marshy at that time, life was hard, and they gave the settlement a few months back on. As a new settlement at today's Wellington was chosen on the coast. The settlement of Petone today will be honored in a museum.

Up to the 1980s Petone was characterized mainly by workers and site of several major industrial companies. Most of them, including an automobile assembly plant and meat processing completed in the 1980s. This initially resulted in a gradual economic decline. In the administrative reform in 1989 Petone lost its status as an independent municipality and was merged with Lower Hutt. The suburbs experienced since then economic growth, mainly through the tourist use of its early European heritage.

Petone today

Petone today develops increasingly becoming a suburb of Lower Hutt or Wellington with a mixed image of working-class background and high-priced apartment buildings.

The well-known in New Zealand Petone Rugby Club was founded in 1885.

Since 1991 is the beginning of the Petone Rotary Fair held on the closed off for this purpose Jackson Street. This fair attracts visitors from across the room Wellington.
