Petrades

Petrades (Greek Πετράδες ( m. pl. ) ) Is a village with 184 inhabitants ( 2011) in the municipality Didymoticho, Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, northeastern Greece.

Location

The local community Petrades ( Topiki Kinotita Petradon Τοπική Κοινότητα Πετράδων ) is bounded on the east and southeast by the Greek-Turkish border river Evros. In the north and in the west bordering Pythio Prangi.

History

The village was founded in the early 19th century by stonemasons who due to the findenen around the stone there settled (Greek: πέτρα = stone). The bricks made ​​here were used to in the 1940s as a building block. Through the production and distribution of the stones the village gained a degree of prosperity. In the wake of the devastation of the Second World War and the Greek Civil War and the fall in demand for stones from Petrades there was a strong emigration - first to Belgium and later as guest workers in the Federal Republic of Germany. Today The largest part of the former inhabitants and their descendants living in Germany, especially in the Stuttgart area.

Culture

On August 15 and 16 is held annually a village festival.
