Petralia Sottana

Petralia Sottana is a city in the province of Palermo in the Italian region Sicily, with 2938 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Petralia Sottana is situated on a rocky outcrop in the Monti Madonie over a valley of Himera Meridional. Distance to Palermo in the north- west is 108 km.

The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture, the food industry and the traditional carpet weaving.

The neighboring municipalities are Alimena Blufi, Caltanissetta (CL ), Castelbuono, Castellana Sicula, Geraci Siculo, Isnello, Marianopoli (CL ), Petralia Soprana, Polizzi Generosa, Resuttano (CL ), Santa Caterina Villarmosa (CL) and Villalba (CL).

History

The town developed around a castle, which was built in 1096 by Roger I. below the village of Petralia Gates.

  • Church of Santa Maria della Fontana, built in the late 16th century, with a portal in the style of Catalan Gothic and a campanile

Events

In August, the first Sunday after the Assumption A Mime Festival Ballo della Pantomima Cordella and an antique wedding procession will be organized. In September, the feast of Our Lady the Alto takes place.
