Petro Korol (Ukrainian Петро Король, scientific transliteration Petro Korol ', often in the Russian form of the name Пётр Король / Piotr Korol, scientific transliteration Petro Korol ', born January 2, 1941 in Bredy, Chelyabinsk Oblast ) is a former Soviet weightlifter.

Career

Petro Korol grew up in Lviv and was Ukrainian. As a teenager, he tried his hand at various sports before turning out to be already over twenty years old in the Soviet army weightlifting. The mid-1960s he had achieved with his performances of the highest caliber Soviet light weight. In 1966, he started regularly with very good results in the Soviet championships, but stagnated until 1970 in its development. It was not until 1971, when already over thirty years old, he made ​​a great leap forward and was used from then on in international championships. At the European Championships in 1971, he was the first time there as a substitute, but was allowed to make a world record attempt in pushing out of competition, which was achieved with 173.5 kg. It was the first time Soviet champion in 1972. His disappointment was big but when not he but the second-placed Mucharbi Kirschinow was used at the Olympic Games in Munich. He remained on active and received in the years 1974 to 1976 his reward for his perseverance. During these years he was a total of seven times world champion and Olympic champion in Montreal even as the actually placed before him Pole Zbigniew Kaczmarek was disqualified for doping and had to give up his gold medal at Petro Korol.
