Petronio Franceschini

Petronio Franceschini ( born January 9, 1651 Bologna, † December 4, 1680 in Venice) was an Italian composer and cellist.

Life

Petronio Franceschini, a brother of the painter Marc'Antonio Petronio Franceschini, studied in his native city at Lorenzo Perti and then in Rome with Giuseppe Corsi detto Celani. Then returned to Bologna and was one of the first members of the Accademia Filarmonica, whose president he was elected in 1673. From 1675 to 1680 he was cellist of the chapel of San Petronio. Then he was called to Venice to compose the opera Dionisio ovvero La virtù trionfante del Vitio. However, he died shortly after the completion of the first act, after an illness. On January 25, 1681 a solemn Requiem by Giovanni Legrenzi was held at the expense of his friends in the church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo for him. His most famous pupils were Giacomo Antonio Perti and Domenico Gabrielli.

Franceschini, who was a representative of the Bolognese School, composed four operas, two oratorios, church music, cantatas and 4 2 canzonettas, several trio sonatas, and a sonata for 2 trumpets, strings and organ.
