Petropavl

Petropavlovsk ( Петропавл Kazakh, Russian Petropavlovsk / Петропавловск ) is a city in the north of Kazakhstan.

Geographical location

The city lies on the River Ishim, near the border with Russia, the North Kazakhstan region and is the provincial capital. Here crosses the oldest and thus original main branch of the Trans-Siberian Railway on a approximately 180 -kilometer section of Kazakh territory (today, however, the main line continues north into Russia on a newer branch ). 11 km south lies the Petropavlovsk airport.

History

The town was founded in the 18th century on June 12, 1752 as a military Cossack fortress to the Central Asian border of the Russian Empire to defend. On May 11, 1849 a fire destroyed more than 450 buildings. The city was named after Peter and Paul.

Population

In the city of 195 162 inhabitants ( 2010) live. About 71 % of the population are ethnic Russians.

Coat of arms

Outside is framed with a traditional Kazakh ornament crest. In the middle is a Şañıraq, the crown of the Kazakh yurt. There are four symbols in it: A key to the accession of the city, wheat sheaf, a gear for the big machinery, a book for education and culture.

In the city the football club FK Qysylschar Petropavlovsk is located.
