Petrovsk, Saratov Oblast

Petrowsk (Russian Петровск ) is a city in the Russian Saratov Oblast. Petrowsk is one of the Oblast imputed town as well as the administrative center of Rajons Petrowsk. The city has about 31,160 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geographical location

Petrowsk located on the banks of the Medveditsa in the north of Saratov Oblast, about five kilometers from the border with the Penza Oblast and about 104 km north-west of the regional center of Saratov. The nearest town Atkarsk 56 km southwest of Petrowsk.

History

In the 17th century a village and an important trading post was built on the site of the present Petrowsk. 1698 the town was fortified due to an order of Peter the Great, to secure the border against incursions of the Crimean Tatars. According to legend, Peter the Great visited the city in the year 1707, only shortly after the foundation. In honor of Peter the Great, the settlement was finally called Petrowsk. 1780 was the municipal rights.

Economy

The most important business enterprises of the city are:

  • Molot ( Молот ), a manufacturer of marine instruments and various consumer goods
  • Branch of the Likhachev Works, an automotive supplier
  • Petrowsker LPU ( Петровское ЛПУ ), natural gas transmission company, a joint venture of Gazprom

Traffic

The town lies on the railway line Sennoi - Rtischtschewo. The train station is Petrowsk - Saratov, to avoid confusion with the stations of the cities Petrowsk ( Transbaikal region ) and Petrowskoje ( Yaroslavl Oblast ).

Furthermore, a Russian highway from Saratov to Penza runs through the city.
