Petrus Christus

Petrus Christus (c. 1410/1420 in Baarle, † 1473 in Bruges ) was a Flemish painter.

Life and work

Petrus Christus was 1444 citizens of Bruges, where he probably died in 1472 or 1473.

He was a pupil of Jan van Eyck, whose style he combined with influences from Rogier van der Weyden and Robert Campin. After the death of van Eyck in 1441, he took over the workshop and exerted a significant influence on other masters of the Bruges school of painting like Dieric Bouts and Geertgen tot sint Jans. In his religious paintings he can not reach van Eyck, his portraits, however, are characterized by static sobriety, achieved by focusing on a few particularly sharp facial details a strong physical effect and are full of character and life. The background of the portraits is reduced, but concrete- and space no longer undefined. Petrus Christus was one of the first Flemish painter who worked intensively on the portrait painting. One of his major works is the portrait of a young lady that hangs in the Gemäldegalerie Berlin today.

Only six of his works can be by signature ( Peter XRI ) safely assign the remaining images are developed. Whether he visited Italy and Italian painters such as Antonello da Messina brought close stylistic and technical solutions of the Flemish school, is unclear.
