Petrykivka

Petrykiwka (Ukrainian Петриківка; Russian Петриковка / Petrikowka ) is an urban-type settlement in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast of Ukraine with 4,704 inhabitants ( 2013).

Petrykiwka is famous as a center of folk art and tradition as well as an original style of decorative painting that was as Petrykiwka Painting 2013 entry into the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

Geography

The town is the administrative center of the raion Petrykiwka and is located about 40 km northeast of Oblastzentrums Dnipropetrovsk and 25 km north of Dniprodserschynsk.

The settlement congregation heard next Petrykiwka the villages Schowtnewe (Ukrainian Жовтневе ) Sotnyzke (Ukrainian Сотницьке ) and Tscherwonopartysanske (Ukrainian Червонопартизанське ).

History

According to legend, the village was founded by the Cossacks Petryk, who gave his protection to the serfs of several villages. The earliest recorded mention Petrykiwkas dates from the year 1772. During the German occupation in World War II Petrywka was the capital of the district Petrikowka within the Reich Commissariat Ukraine. The village was granted the status of an urban-type settlement in 1957.
