Peugeot 407 (2004-2006)

The Peugeot 407 was a mid-sized cars of the 400 series of the French car manufacturer Peugeot. He joined in April 2004, the successor to the 406 series. The 407 shared the floor pan with the Citroën C5 and was produced in Rennes in Brittany. Distinctive features of this model were the relatively large-sized air intake in the front end and the far drawn back headlights.

The 407 is comparable with the VW Passat midsize vehicle. He was clearly in France at the forefront of this market segment and in Europe had a substantial volume of sales. The vehicle was on a total high technical standard (5 stars in NCAP crash test, particle filter, Cornering Brake Control, optional twin-turbo diesel engines with 200 hp).

In addition, there was from December 2005 a coupe that has not been made as the previous series at Pininfarina in Turin, but as the sedan in Rennes. Especially popular was the big Station Wagon, SW for short, which is now no longer - as usual with PSA - Break was called and visually sportier than the sedan is displayed. He could be ordered with an extra-large glass roof that can affect the interior brighter.

In December 2010, production of the sedan and wagon was discontinued. Successor has been since January 2011, the Peugeot 508 Production of the coupe ended in December 2011.

Specifications

  • Note: The amounts refer to the sedan and the coupe ( 3.0 HDi ).

The built- in 407 3.0-liter V6 engine ES9A brings compared to the 3.0 -liter engine used in the 406, a noticeable performance increase with it, which was achieved in particular by the following changes:

  • Variable valve timing VVT camshaft adjustment
  • New exhaust system with active two-stage muffler ( pneumatically controlled switchover valve ) improved noise performance under normal operating conditions ( flap closed)
  • Improve performance under stress (with cover open )

The 163- hp diesel engine is combined as standard with the 407 and 407 sw with an automatic that has a significant increase in consumption ( values in parentheses) result.

The motor DW12BTED4 is equipped with a common rail injection system of the third generation, which provides a maximum pressure of 1800 bar.

Overboost is a means for rapid acceleration for a short time the charging pressure on the "normal" value is increased, thus enabling an increase in the maximum engine torque.

The DV6TED4 engine is the first diesel engine of the PSA Group with electric throttle unit ( heating of the intake air and recirculation of exhaust gases ).

Both the 1.6 HDi and the 2.0 HDi (136 bhp) are equipped with:

  • Common Rail injection system of the second generation, provides a maximum pressure of 1600 bar.
  • Turbocharger with variable geometry and electronic control
  • Intercooler
  • 2nd generation particulate filter
  • Cylinder head with four valves per cylinder

The 2.7-liter V6 twin-turbo diesel was developed as a joint project with Ford. The unit has two turbochargers ( one per cylinder bank ) and was praised by the German press. It was also used in some Jaguar models and since 2006 also in the Peugeot 607 and the Citroen C6 and C5. This engine was further developed into the 3.0 HDi which replaced the 2.7 HDi from 2009, and also in the coupe version of the 407 was used.

The 2.0 HDi diesel was revised in late 2008 and now 103 kW instead of 100 kW, consumes an average of 5.7 instead of 5.9 liters and reaches the future Euro -5 emissions standard. For countries in which bioethanol is funded by the state, there is also a 2.0-liter gasoline engine, which can also be operated with E85. From 2009, the 135- hp version of the 2.0 HDi is only with 6- speed automatic offered as the new 2.0 HDi is initially available only with a 6- speed manual transmission.

In the Euro NCAP crash test was the 407 five out of five stars. The occupants of the 407 sedan and SW are depending on equipment protected by up to nine airbags: driver airbag, passenger airbag, a knee airbag for the driver, two continuous curtain airbags left and right for the heads, two front side airbags, and two optional rear side airbags.
