Peyriat

Peyriat is a commune in the French department of Ain, in the Rhône -Alpes.

Geography

Peyriat is situated 630 m above sea level. Level, about 16 kilometers southwest of the city Oyonnax (air line). The farming village extends north Bugey, in a hollow position, which opens north to the basin of Izernore, in the Jura region, east of the anticline of the Montagne de Berthiand.

History

Is first mentioned Peyriat in 1299 under the name Peyria. Over time, the spelling on Peria ( 1394) and Peyriacum ( 1483 ) to Peyriaz (1789 ) transformed. From the 12th century to 1402 belonged to the domination of Peyriat Thoire -Villars, after which it came under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy. The Treaty of Lyon Peyriat arrived in 1601 to France.

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Brice was built in the 14th century in the Gothic style and remodeled in 1867.

Population

With 172 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Peyriat one of the small communities of the department of Ain. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (1891 174 persons were still counted ), a significant population increase has been recorded since the early 1970s again.
