Pézènes-les-Mines

Pézènes -les -Mines is a commune of 246 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) in the department of Hérault in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. It belongs to the district of the canton of Béziers and Bédarieux.

Geography

The community Pézènes -les -Mines is located ten kilometers east of Bédarieux, 20 kilometers west of Clermont l' Hérault and about 30 kilometers north of Beziers, surrounded by the municipalities Brenas, Mérifons, Valmascle, Montesquieu, Fos, Roquessels, Faugères, Bédarieux and Carlencas -et- Levas. The village center has medieval origins and winds around a castle from the 11th to around 17th century. The princely palace situated on the hill above the village and overlooks it. In the valley in the summer mostly falling dry river Peyne drags, which opens at Pezenas in Herault after it has fed the reservoir of Olivettes at Vailhan. More water runs hot and Thongue Courbezou. The towering old houses rise above narrow uphill streets and stairs. The place is located in a wooded valley between the hills of the adjacent wine-growing region of Faugères and near the Regional Natural Park of Haut Languedoc ( frz: Parc naturel régional du Haut- Languedoc ) in about six kilometers away. The municipality consists of the village itself, and five hamlets ( les Vignals, Braunhe la, les Montades, le Mas Bousquet, Taussac ) and two domains ( Pouzes, Roudanergue ).

History

The area seems to have been inhabited in the Neolithic period, testifies the dolmen of Le Puech. Pézènes -les -Mines was already inhabited in Roman times, it has the Roman bridge down behind the church, in 1985 a Roman wine press was discovered in Mas Pommier. The recently renovated village Church ( Église de l' Épiphanie du Seigneur, today showroom ) is of Roman origin. In the 8th century the area suffered from incursions of the Saracens. Emperor Charlemagne is said to have voted against it Pézènes according to tradition, in preparation for a battle. This body is called to this day " field of the meeting ." The battle may have taken place in Fos, where we find a garment with the name " battlefield ".

Economics and Geology

The name suffix les -Mines owes the community bauxite mining in the surrounding area ( La Braunhe, Peyreblanque, Uston ). Served bauxite for aluminum production and has been mined in the area of Bédarieux, La Tour-sur -Orb, Carlencas and Pézènes -les -Mines of the early 20th century to the year 1975. The bauxite in the Hérault is found in argillaceous rocks with up to 65% aluminum oxide content in conjunction with iron oxide, of which the color of the rock explains the white from brown to red or pink, occasionally, rarely yellow ranges. During the Second World War, the German occupation exploited from the bauxite mines due to a strong demand for aluminum for the production flight stuff was.
