Pfalz D.VIII

The Pfalz D.VIII was a product manufactured by the Pfalz- Flugzeugwerke fighter aircraft of the German Air Force in the final stages of the First World War.

Development

The 15 -strong team of engineers of the company Palatinate under chief engineer Rudolph Low since November 1917 worked on eleven different designs with the aim to present them on the first fighter - comparison flights in Berlin- Adlershof. Experienced front flyer here should undergo the presented prototypes of numerous manufacturers extensive testing and decide through their opinions that machines should be placed in production.

The Palatinate works presented from the number of their designs, the finished prototype with rotary engines Palatinate D.VI ( 110 hp Le Rhone), Pfalz D.VII and to their very compact sisters somewhat more prolonged Pfalz D.VIII, both with 160 hp Siemens - Halske engines, but were considered unreliable and needed a not in sufficient quality required, very easy special liquid oil.

Overall, the Palatinate -examination could still prevail, neither in January, with the second comparison Flying May / June 1918 against the general favorites Fokker D.VII, D.VIII again introduced in the Palatinate. Nevertheless, a smaller series was commissioned.
