Pfalzbau

The Pfalzbau is a concert and theater in the city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein, which is also used for exhibitions and congresses. It has its own company, but is run as Gastspieltheater. Occasionally presents the Pfalzbau also own and co-productions with other theaters.

History

The Pfalzbau was inaugurated on 21 September 1968, and the succession to the "old Pfalzbau " at Berliner Platz in 1928, which was destroyed in the bombing raids on 6 September 1943 and on 6 January 1945. After the war the building was built temporarily in part again, but had to give way in 1957 to the new high road traffic management. From 2007 to 2009, the Pfalzbau was renovated and rebuilt. Events of the house had during its turn to other venues.

Current artistic director of the theater is Hans Günther Heyme, who succeeded Michael Haensel 2004.

Palatinate column

Before Pfalzbau is the Palatinate column, a 21 m high obelisk, the Munich artist Blasius Spreng had designed together with the Ludwigshafen artist Ernst W. Kunz. It is one of the outdoor complex was inaugurated on September 21, 1968 new Pfalzbau, the theater of the city of Ludwigshafen.

Originally, the Palatinate column was surrounded by 200 sqm large round pool of water with several small fountains, but this was the early 1990s, replaced by a stone pedestal in the redesign of the square, flows through the water.

A model of the Palatinate column is awarded by the City of Ludwigshafen to deserving citizens or partner cities.
