Pfaudler

The Pfaudler Werke GmbH in Schwetzingen, Baden- Württemberg, founded as The Pfaudler Co. in the U.S. and named after the German brewmaster Caspar Pfaudler, manufactures enameled components and products for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.

Company History

Caspar Pfaudlers idea was to accelerate the fermentation of beer by vacuum. The then usual wooden barrels were not suitable for this, because they were not tight enough to hold the vacuum. The solution seemed to be steel tanks, however, their purification proved problematic.

First experiments with enamelled steel tanks promised success. Their smooth surface allowed the simple and easy cleaning of the tanks, and unlike glass containers steel enameled tank can hold high pressures and vacuum.

Pfaudler founded together with financiers The Pfaudler Co. and participated in 1884 in Rochester in the USA, the production of enameled steel containers. Soon they became aware of this new method of brewing in Europe. The transport of large, internally enamelled steel tanks to Europe, however, was time-consuming and costly. A work in Germany was required. The choice for the new plant in Germany fell to Schwetzingen, Baden, where I already had established several breweries.

In the 1930s, the chemical industry also discovered glass-lined vessels for their own purposes. Soon after followed the pharmaceutical companies.

Until the end of February 2013, the Pfaudler Werke GmbH were wholly owned by the US-listed company Robbins & Myers, Inc. After this was purchased by the American company National Oilwell Varco (NOV ), also the title to the Pfaudler Werke GmbH went to in February 2013 this about.

Pfaudler has, among other plants in South America, India, Scotland and China.
