Head of a smooth Beetle - SEM image

The smoothness beetle ( Phalacridae ) represent a family of beetles, which comprises 500 species worldwide.

Features

There are small, roundish oval, shiny, usually black or brown beetles, whose body is strongly arched. They are 1.2 to 3.5 millimeters long. The sensors are elfgliedrig and carry a tripartite sensor lobe. The large eyes are flat, the head is pulled up to the eyes in the pronotum. The tarsi are five-membered, the third term is bilobed or emarginate at the top at least. The fourth element is small, the jaws are serrated. There is a smooth, beveled, bounded by a transverse line sliding surface for the cross on the elytra prothorax at the base of the elytra.

Way of life

The smoothness flower beetles are beetles; the Olibrus species develop in the flower heads of composite flowers, the Phalacrus species mostly in the affected by fire and rust fungi ears of sweet and sour grasses. Some species produce several generations per year.

System

In Central Europe, the smooth beetles by three genera ( Phalacrus, Olibrus, Stilbus ) are represented by 24 species in Europe, there are about 60 species and sub- species from five genera.
