Phalangiidae

Opilio parietinus

The Schneider ( Phalangiidae ) constitute a family within the order of harvestmen ( Opiliones ). In Central Europe it is represented by about 33 species, whereas in the past about 380 species have been described worldwide.

Representatives of Phalangiidae belong to the suborder Eupnoi, outdated also Palpatores and are distributed worldwide, but they seem to be missing in Antarctica, Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia. In the various parts of the world to subfamilies can be distinguished.

Your name is derived from the ancient Greek and means roughly phalangion harvest workers or, better, lighter crop.

Features

Phalangiden stand out for their long pedipalps, which are developed big and strong, almost like running leg. The pedipalps also have a functioning Tarsalklaue and may be hairy, bristles or pinnate. The Tarsalklaue is smooth-edged to bezähnelt. The normally proportioned chelicerae have uniformly large, massive, partially double teeth. The dorsal scutum is weichhäutig and poorly developed and, if identified at all, developed as scutum parvum.
