Phalombe

Phalombe is a small town in the north of Malawi Mulanje Massif at the southwestern foot of the mountain of the same name, 2289 meters high and one district with an area of ​​1394 km ² and a population of 231 990. Just south of the city the Lukulezi mission lies with a hospital. On the mountain is operated with a pine species originating from Mexico intense silviculture. The district extends almost to the southern shores of Lake Chilwa and is considered one of the poorest in Malawi. The lowest rates of economic growth in Malawi in 1997-98 focused on poor and over-populated districts in the south, including Phalombe at 1.5%.

Phalombe is in an awkward location in the valley, the so-called Lister corridor. Since the two massifs rain catchers, it comes in the rainy season repeatedly to violent flash floods from the rocky heights, which can cause very heavy debris with it. Most recently, in 1991 such a disaster in which hundreds of people lost their lives and in place leaving a two to three -meter-high mud and rubble layer occurred.
