Work

Phanokles, whose origin and precise lifetime are unknown, appeared in the early Hellenistic era. It is known only one written by him Elegy collection, entitled cupids or Beautiful ( Ερωτες ἢ Καλοί ) contributed and dealt with the subject of pederasty. Were described amorous relations of gods and mythical heroes at attractive boys. The arrangement of the material was catalog fashion, the woman Catalog Hesiod served as a model. The 3 books of love elegies Leon -tion of the Greek poet Hermesianax should have passed a certain proximity.

In Florilegium, put together by John Stobaeus collection of excerpts of Greek texts, a longer fragment of Phanokles is obtained. This fragment, which is among the most beautiful specimens of Greek elegiac poetry, treats the love of Orpheus for young KALAIS, the son of the wind god Boreas, and his death by Thracian women. Other fragments show that were also described in Phanokles ' work include the love of Cycnus to Phaethon, of Dionysus to Adonis, from Tantalus to Ganymede and of Agamemnon Argynnos. It is Phanokles ' interest in aetiology and his rationalization of myths detectable.
