Phanom Rung historical park

Phanom Rung (full name Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung, Thai: ปราสาท หิน เขาพนม รุ้ง, pronunciation: [ pra ː sà ː t hǐn k ʰ ǎw p ʰ anom Run], such as: a palace of stone on the mountain Phnom Rung, this is called Phnom Rung in Khmer as " Wide Mountain" ) is a temple district on an extinct volcano in what is now Thailand, approximately 50 kilometers south of the provincial capital of Buriram located.

Early inscriptions from the 7th or 8th century suggest that an early temple stood here from the Chenla period.

History

The Prasat Hin Khao Phnom Rung is probably one of the most impressive monuments of the Khmer in Thailand. The area was between the early 9th century and 13th century Angkor largely independent principality of the dynasty Mahidharapura.

The temple complex located in 381 meters height symbolized once the abode of Shiva on the sacred mountain Krailasa ( Kailash ) and was built between the early 10th century and the late 12th century by the then ruling Khmer there. In particular, during the reign of King Suryavarman II significant enhancements have been carried out here. As with other temples on mountain peaks (eg Prasat Preah Vihear and Phnom Chisor ) also here the architecture was adapted to the natural conditions. A long stairway leads up to the main district. The actual temple is reached by a 160 meter long elevated walkway that is flanked by columns and supplies to the naga bridge. The bridge symbolizes the transition from the profane to the sacred world. Another staircase leads to an area with four pools, past which is accessed via a second bridge in the actual temple.

Phanom Rung is known for carefully executed masonry work, for example, show a war elephant that tramples an enemy. This may be one of the first historical works of art from the Angkor period. Most other representations Shiva worship and asceticism. The eleven inscriptions of Phanom Rung are particularly interesting because they contain a representation of the regional organization of Angkor.

About one - now leading through the jungle - road this temple with the temple city of Angkor Wat in present-day Cambodia and the Prasat Hin Phimai ( Thailand ) was connected.

A reduced copy of the sanctuary can be seen in the way the Ancient City ( Muang Boran ) in Samut Prakan near Bangkok.

From 1971 to 1988 restored Thailand's " Department of Fine Arts " the system.

Historical Park

On 21 May 1988, the " Historical Park Phanom Rung " ( อุทยาน ประวัติศาสตร์ พนม รุ้ง ) was opened by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. In 2005, the temple district of UNESCO was handed over to check for a future World Heritage Site.
