Phantasmagoria is the third studio album by British progressive rock band Curved Air It was released in 1972 on Warner Bros. Records.

Creation and publication

After the second album by the bassist Ian Eyre left the band and was replaced by Mike Wedgwood. This occupation, however, held only for the third album of the band, because after Phantasmagoria rose Francis Monkman, Darryl Way and Florian Pilkington - Miksa from. The album was recorded ( among others Chris Pyne, and Frank Ricotti ) in London, the band and Colin Caldwell produced it in March 1972 with a number of guest musicians.

Style

Curved Air Phantasmagoria play song -oriented, playful progressive rock with influences from folk, jazz and classical music. In the foreground is Sonja Kristina's versatile singing, the varied pieces are orchestrated complex structured and rich with guitar, violin, flute, keyboards, brass instruments and various percussion instruments. The atmosphere is often fragile and magical. The title of the album was a collection of poems by Lewis Carroll borrowed.

Reception

The album reached # 20 in the UK charts, is now regarded as the finest work of the band and as a classic of progressive rock. Dave Thompson of Allmusic called Phantasmagoria as " fabulous " and " brilliant " album. Siggy Zielinski of the Baby Blue Pages finds it " original, naive and intelligent at the same time ," Achim Breiling " certainly the best of what the British Prog brought forth at the beginning of the 70s ," it belongs to. The eclipsed magazine took Phantasmagoria on its list of the 150 most important prog albums.
