Province

Phayao ( Thai: พะเยา ) is a city ( เทศบาล เมือง พะเยา ) in the Thai province of Phayao. It is the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Phayao and Phayao Province. The Phayao province is located in the northern region of Thailand.

The town has 17,689 inhabitants Phayao. (2012 )

Geography

The city lies between Lampang and Chiang Rai in the midst of an impressive mountain landscape on a six-kilometer long and four kilometers wide lake, Kwan Phayao said.

History

Founded in the 11th century, Phayao was briefly became the capital of a small kingdom, which came to Lan Na in 1338.

Importance and economic

Tourist Phayao is barely tapped, too remote this area is.

Attractions

  • Wat Sri Khom Kham ( Thai: วัด ศรี โคม คำ ) - Temple at the lake with a supposedly 500 year old Buddha statue, which is called by the locals Phra Chao Ton Luang ( พระเจ้า ตน หลวง ). She is 17 meters high, is the largest Buddha statue of Lanna. It was built of brick and covered with gold, according to legend, it is said to have needed 33 years to complete it. The Viharn in which the statue is housed, is quite a modern, earlier she stood outside by the lake. Each year in May, here's a great temple festival is celebrated.
