Phegopteris connectilis

Buchenfarn ( Phegopteris connectilis )

The Buchenfarn ( Phegopteris connectilis ) is a native of Central Europe fern of the family of Sumpffarngewächse. The Buchenfarn is the only one in Europe occurring from a total of three species of the genus Phegopteris.

Description

The Buchenfarn achieved a growth rate of 15 to 30 ( 50) centimeters. The rhizome is creeping to ascending and elongated. Therefore, the leaves are often individually, not in a rosette, but in herds close together. The leaf blade is 1.2 to 2 times as long as wide. It is in outline triangular to arrow-shaped and has a spreuschuppige top. The middle pinnae set wide at the blade spindle. The lowest leaflets are available from the bottom. The sori are small and schleierlos. Sporenreife is from July to September.

The chromosome number is 2n = 90

Ecology

The Buchenfarn is a deciduous rhizomatous Geophyt. The rhizome measures only 1-2.5 mm in diameter. The stomata are located in adaptation to its humid location on the leaf upper and lower leaf surface.

The spores spread as granules flyer. The generative propagation is apomictically, ie Prothallus and sporophyte have the same set of chromosomes, triploid here. The sporophyte develops without fertilization of the egg cell and spore formation eliminates the reduction division.

Asexual reproduction occurs through the rhizome.

Dissemination

The species has a circumpolar area. The distribution is described as submeridional / montane to oceanic boreal with expression.

It is found throughout Europe, but is rare in the south. In Austria it is quite common and occurs in all provinces with the exception of Vienna before. In Germany he is also common, but in some states at risk (Schleswig -Holstein, North Rhine -Westphalia, Saarland, Saxony- Anhalt, lowland region of Lower Saxony ).

Habitat

The Buchenfarn mainly grows in forests on mucky, humus-rich, calcium-poor soils and more acidophilous, but also in bushes, tall herb fringe communities and in the krummholz. He often occurs in beech, fir and spruce mixed forests. It comes in the montane to subalpine altitudinal belt before.
