Phelline

Phelline is the only plant genus of the family of Phellinaceae in the order of the aster -like ( Asterales ). The areas of the species are restricted to New Caledonia.

Description

Phelline species are evergreen trees or shrubs. The alternate or whorled arranged on the branches, often concentrated at the ends of branches leaves are simple and entire. Stipules absent.

They are dioecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( monoecious ). In paniculate or racemose inflorescences ( inflorescence ) flowers are borne. The four-to sixfold flowers are radial symmetry. The two Blütenhüllblattkreise are distinctly different. The four to six small sepals are fused at the base and even in the open bud stage. The four to six small petals are not fused. There is only one circle with four to six free, fertile stamens. In the female flowers staminodes are present. Two to five carpels are fused into a superior ovaries. A stylus is hardly recognizable and so the sits strikingly large scar just above the ovary. Forming drupes having two to five seeds.

System

The genus was previously expected to Aquifoliaceae. Probably the closest relatives are the Alseuosmiaceae and Argophyllaceae.

Even with the mushrooms there was a family Phellinaceae, today Hymenochaetaceae in the order of the bristle -like Scheiblingkirchen ( Hymenochaetales ) within the stand fungi ( Basidiomycetes ) to the stand fungi ( Basidiomycota ) belong to the genus fire sponges ( Phellinus ).
