ω -bromoacetophenone is a severe eye irritant chemical compound that is set back in their eye irritancy only slightly behind chloroacetophenone.

History

ω -bromoacetophenone was first mentioned in 1871 by A. Emmerling and C. Engler.

Production and representation

ω -bromoacetophenone is obtained by bromination of acetophenone.

Properties

Chemically speaking, ω -bromoacetophenone a mixed aliphatic- aromatic ketone. As a pure substance ω -bromoacetophenone is in the form of colorless rhombic crystals, the technical product is colored yellow-brown. The production is possible by bromination of acetophenone or by the Friedel -Crafts acylation of benzene with bromoacetyl bromide in the presence of aluminum chloride as a catalyst.

The melting point is at about 50 ° C, the boiling point is about 133 ° C. In case of contact with ω -bromoacetophenone flushing of the eyes is necessary.

Use

ω -bromoacetophenone is used mainly as an intermediate for preparation of pharmaceuticals and other chemical compounds (for example, of indoles by Bischler - Möhlau indole synthesis ).
