2- phenylethyl alcohol is a chemical compound selected from the group consisting of alcohols, the smell of roses.

Occurrence

Phenylethyl alcohol is part of a large number of natural essential oils such as from hyacinths, carnations, roses and geraniums.

Production and representation

Phenylethyl alcohol can be recovered by

  • Friedel- Crafts acylation of benzene with ethylene oxide
  • Hydrogenation of styrene on Raney nickel
  • Reduction of phenylacetic esters with sodium in absolute ethanol
  • Reaction of phenylmagnesium bromide and ethylene oxide with subsequent hydrolysis

Properties

2-phenylethanol is a colorless liquid with a smell of rose petals and honey and a sharp, burning taste. The substance is sensitive to light and decomposes under the action of air.

Use

Phenylethyl alcohol is an important part for smelling of roses perfumes and is widely used for recreation of sweet floral scents such as orange blossom, jasmine, geranium and many others It is stable to alkalis, making it ideal as a fragrance in soaps.

He continues to serve as a source of organic (especially perfume ) syntheses. His esters with lower fatty acids and the alkyl ethers (called KEWDA ether) are also valuable olfactory and flavorings. By mild oxidation may be prepared from the phenylethyl phenylacetaldehyde and by further oxidizing the phenylacetic acid.

Phenylethanol there also acts bacteriostatically, it can be used also as a preservative, disinfectant and antiseptic.

Safety

2-phenylethanol is highly irritating to the eyes even in low concentrations. When the intake of larger amounts through the respiratory tract or skin disorders of the central nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract can occur.
