Phenylene
A phenylene group, and phenylene group, is known in organic chemistry, a divalent organic residue, that is, the atom group -C6H4 -. Examples of compounds having a phenylene group as the motif are ortho-, meta -and para -xylene, ortho-, meta-and para -phenylenediamine, ortho-, meta-, and para- hydroxybenzoic acid and phthalic acid and phthalic anhydride.
The phenylene group should not be confused with the phenyl group ( - C6H5), the benzyl ( - CH2Ph ) or the benzoyl group (-C (O) Ph).
An example of an important in everyday life molecule having a phenylene group is acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), a drug.
